Flight Map (Fly Pilot)
Business challenge
Our client - a marketer of navigation and GPS equipment decided to complement its
product line with GPS software for Palm OS, targeted specifically to civil pilots.
Our team developed Flight Pilot software for GPS navigation designed specifically for
this target audience. Flight Pilot supports NMEA standard for communication with GPS devices.
Solution
Fly Pilot combines GPS moving map navigation with flight planning, which almost
eliminates the need for a separate flight computer. The application is simple and
intuitive and works with any GPS device supporting NMEA standard.
Fly Pilot offers convenient ways of getting and utilizing geographical information
while on the road. You can import any maps to your handheld device in two different ways:
At home, use Cartographer application to import digital maps (from the
Internet, from digital Atlases, etc) or scanned paper maps. The GPS Pilot
Windows tool Cartographer allows converting and calibrating graphic maps files
(.BMP, .GIF, .JPG) to a Palm readable format. These maps are transferred to a
handheld device during the Hotsync.
On the road, upload instantly to your Palm, ready-to-use maps of your current
area from the Internet. The Internet based map service can also be accessed wirelessly.
Benefits
Fly Pilot is an excellent GIS and GPS application for Palm. Easy-to-use and intuitive
design of application screens, implemented with the use of custom-made controls, eliminates
almost the need to constantly consult the manual. The application provides excellent moving
map display and advanced scrolling, which allows smooth and accurate scrolling of large images
while using small amount of memory. We utilized our own object-oriented library for Palm OS platform
to reduce development costs.
Technologies: STL, Palm Databases, math.lib, graphic files compression, Dynamic libraries
for PalmOS, user defined forms to support non-standard functionality and controls, advanced
gray-scale graphic mode.
